  174. As I have not achieved critical mass in the number of orders for the
  175. Motorola GPS engines, I am shutting down the group purchase.
  176.  
  177. I am on vacation for the next two weeks.  If, upon returning, there has
  178. not been enough orders received to reach the magic 100 mark, I will be
  179. returning the checks to those who have sent them to me, and
  180. discontinuing any efforts in this area.  As of now, I have orders for
  181. about 35 units.  For those of you interested, that's about $13,000
  182. sitting on my desk.

  233. I've owned my TM742A for about a year and a half now, and I've got a really
  234. bizarre problem I wondered if anyone might have seen before...
  235.  
  236. About a year ago, I had just finished the installation of the radio in my
  237. car, and I started programming the memories with various and sundry frequencies
  238. in the Minneapolis area.  As I recall, I got into the Minneapolis Police Dept
  239. frequencies on 440 (460.100, 460.125, etc), when all of a sudden, the rig
  240. completely locked up - wouldn't accept input or anything, and about 30 seconds
  241. later, it shut itself down.
  242.  
  243. I sent the radio back to the dealer, and they performed a hardware processor
  244. reset - disconnecting the lithium battery, and reconnecting it (the darn thing
  245. is *soldered* to the board, of all things...).
  246.  
  247. At the time, I thought it was just a fluke...
  248.  
  249. Two days ago, I was programming the same frequencies into memory, and guess
  250. what - it locked *again* - exact same symptoms as before.
  251.  
  252. The processor seems to have locked in some sort of odd loop - if I hold the
  253. power button on for about 5-7 seconds, the unit will come on, but all of the
  254. display segments are lit up, and it shuts itself down again after a short
  255. period of time.  It also indicates "-on-" when I turn the ignition on in
  256. the car.
  257.  
  258. I plan to give Kenwood a call tomorrow and see if they've seen this before,
  259. and if they know of a fix for this problem.
  260.  
  261. Has anyone else seen this behaviour in the 742?
  262.  
  263. Two other minor things I've noticed about the rig:
  264.  
  265. 1.  The clock gains about 15 minutes every 6 months or so.
  266.  
  267. 2.  Somehow, when I've got the DTMF remote enabled, it'll pick up random noise
  268. from somewhere and change some of the settings for the currently selected
  269. channel.  I know at least one other person who experiences this as well...
  270.  
  271. Any information would be *greatly* appreciated.  If anyone knows how to perform
  272. a hardware reset without desoldering the battery, I'd be in your debt...

  295. 1.  MOUNT.  Magnet mounts are fine and, when careful, don't damage paint. 
  296. You might want to use a piece of waxed paper between the mount and the car
  297. body, just in case.  The mag mount can easily be removed and put in the
  298. trunk.
  299.  
  300. On some magmounts, the cable used is in RG58 which is usually small enough
  301. in diameter to go through the large weather stripping of a car trunk
  302. without significant pinching.  Some mag mounts use a larger RG8 or Japanese
  303. equivalent cable which may still go through the weather strip OK.
  304.  
  305. 2.   NMO vs. UHF.  I don't have the specs but my impression is that there
  306. are marginal differences in performance on the 2M or 70 CM bands in
  307. comparing the NMO and UHF type connectors for the antenna.  If you think
  308. you might use 1.2 ghz someday, you may want to consider buying a tri-band
  309. antenna  with an N connector...BTW, I use NMO and N connectors on my
  310. present antennas.  The NMO was chosen because that's what Ham Radio Outlet
  311. had in stock that day.  I.e., I never really had to make the UHF vs. NMO
  312. decision but I remember wondering about the differences too on my first
  313. antenna buy.
  314.  
  315. Since you'll be using your HT as the mobile rig, you may want to consider
  316. putting a BNC connector on the radio end.  I suspect this will increase
  317. your performance more than the difference between a UHF and an NMO.
  318.  
  319. 3.   SPRING/COIL.  I'm not sure what you're referring to.  I think what
  320. you're talking about is that some dual band antennas use coils with Allen
  321. set screws and others wind a coil right out of the antenna element, itself.
  322.  I have no preference and I let the antenna manufacturer/designer decide
  323. which is best for them.  From my understanding, these coils are integral
  324. part of designing a multi-element, co-linear antenna which results in more
  325. gain, not losses.
  326.  
  327. 4.  ANLI vs. Others.  I have not owned the AT-2B model which you've
  328. mentioned.  My only advice is to take a close look at the antenna's
  329. construction and compare it to a top of the line Diamond.  I can tell you
  330. of my experience with a Comet B20NMO which I owned.  The hinge feature was
  331. nice but this particular antenna's spring was just weak enough, or the
  332. mechanical connection was just off enough causing the antenna's hinge to
  333. pop up and lay down when driving on the freeway or going over bumps.  Being
  334. a good Ham, I tried to take the antenna apart to remedy the problem but
  335. broke it and ended up throwing it away...
  336.  
  337. 5.  Diamond vs. Comet vs. Larson.  I now own a Diamond NR770NMO and it's
  338. great and I bought it used too, saving some more money!  I also own a
  339. Larson 2M monoband which is nice and flexible.   I already told you about
  340. my Comet experience...oh, and I own a Diamond NR-124 monoband for 1.2 ghz.
  341.  
  342. I think the slightly higher gain, while useful for an HT, would not be as
  343. important to me as quality construction.  Using an HT, while mobile, I
  344. think the gain differences between an SG7500 and an NR770 will be
  345. insignificant to you, but do consider the length, too.  The SG7900 is 62"
  346. and not usually recommended for a magmount.  I think an advertised 1db
  347. difference may be noticeable but anything less is debateable.
  348.  
  349. 6.  LAST THOUGHTS.  I trunk mount could also be used which will clamp onto
  350. the edge of your trunk.  Paint should be OK as the set screws tighten from
  351. the underside of the trunk lip and the part of the mount which touches the
  352. top of the trunk's paint is also cushioned or designed to protect paint. 
  353. The cable kits may use the RG58 size or, if using bigger stuff, have a
  354. short skinny piece of coax spliced in just for going through tight fitting
  355. weather stripping.  When parking in questionable college areas I would
  356. recommend, simply, unscrewing the antenna from the mount and putting the
  357. antenna in the car.
  358.  
  359. Just remember, these comments are just what I would do.  Whatever is done
  360. is not necessarily right or wrong, and it's all just time and money.  If it
  361. doesn't work out the first time, just buy (or make) and try again.  As
  362. often quoted by me, "When in doubt, by both!"
  363.  
  364. Good luck.  Your ideas, so far, are  sound.  I guess you just need to
  365. decide on mounts now.

  432. I've had an FT-11 for a couple of months and I'm quite pleased with it. I 
  433. think of all the HTs I've owned over the years, the FT-11 is the neatest, 
  434. smallest and most fun of all. And yes, it does have wide band receive and 
  435. AM aircraft coverage.

  437. The only thing I miss with this xcvr is a direct dc input jack, but the 
  438. accessory mobile adapter is reasonably priced and provides dc power for 5 
  439. watt operation (you'll really need to buy the external speaker-mike in 
  440. order to utilize the adapter appropriately.)

  506. My Yahoo FT470 & 411 say NO NICADS in the AA pack.  My Icom 2SRA (just like 
  507. your W2A) take NiCads just fine.  Its probably because the charger circuitry 
  508. is built into the Icom radios instead of the pack.  Although there may be some 
  509. danger for some radios, I think the warning is more to protect their battery 
  510. pack profits than the radio.
